Fish appears to be mechanical - it swims like a clockwork fish, with head and tail having lost their coordination.

This happens when a fish has broken its back, due to sudden shock or sudden vibration - the fish has engaged its flight muscle, which in most cases is the cause. Koi very really use these muscles unless they are being chased by a net or a predator, or even spawning.

Other causes are bacterial infection of the dorsal muscle, and or the head, kidney.

There is no know treatment I know off> However, most fish survive long periods, some even years.
